Re: Hatchi: A virtual pet for IOS
Anyone looking for a more advanced pet game should check the games to play online page over at www.whitestic.co.uk, sinse there are several browser based pet care games there, some of which have entries here on the db like furry paws and Psy pets.
Furry paws is a virtual dog training game and apparently has a very friendly community. Mechanically it combines all the aspects of pet care, eg, dayly tasks to perform, with shows where dogs compete in various activities like agility or pulling, breeding activities and having a dog related profession such as breeder or trainer. It's thus got some rpg aspects in a dog related way as well as the pet care.
Psy pets is a rather more complex one, but one that requires patience. In the game, you get pets who you need to take care of according to Abraham MAslow's hierarchy of needs, eg, food, safety, shelter, love, self isteem etc. If you take care of your pets they do thin gs like go and gather resources or hunt, and then more of your pets who enjoy engeneeering, textiles or the like will use the resources to make things which you can then sell.
Quite complex in the management, and also requires lots of patience, sinse your pets only act once an hour, but good if you fancy that style of game.
The games to play online page over at www.whitestick.co.uk also lists several more games such as show dog, show horse and show cat, bu I know less about those having not tried them.
Also, bare in mind some of the pokemon type games have limited pet care aspects, Puppet nightmares has breeding and feeding for example, and monster breeder has breeding and working, though there like pokemon the emphasis is more on batling and rpg style combat than on the care aspects.
There are also a couple of pokemon style monster battle aps on the Iphone, but I've not yet seen one which is properly accessible. monster Kingdom is fine accept for the battles sinse there is no way of telling what is going on other than learning sounds and guessing, plus the inventory and other screens are a little screwee. while the haypy monster games have labels that are a nightmare and battles where you really have to guess.
Again though, both are havily based on battling rather than creature care.
It'd actually be fun if someone did something a little more in the middle, an rpg with battling and exploring and questing, but where you needed to take care of your pets regularly, feed them, make sure they did what they liked to do etc, sadly I've not run across one yet.
