Re: himachi alternative

If this is for gaming purposes, then unless you want to play across a LAN using a dumb public rendezvous server such as that operated by VIPGamesZone, then you have no real need for Hamachi, and it's time to start learning how to knock holes in your firewall/NAT box. If you aren't comfortable doing this using the web interface, then if you have UPnP/NAT-PMP/PCP turned on, you may be able to use a port mapping tool for your platform, such as the built-in Windows UPnP/IGD client, to forward the ports on a temporary basis. This doesn't work for anything but the simplest cases however, EG you want to run a game server 24/7, in which case you will need to make arrangements to reserve a DHCP-assigned address for your computer and add an explicit mapping for the ports in use that forward to that server. The process for doing this is, sadly, different for every brand of router.
