An alias is just a way of creating a short command that expands into a bunch of other commands. You can set them in the game to reduce the amount of typing; for example, I often create an alias for the two letters 'sa' to get gold from a corpse, then sac the corpse.
Regarding grouping at high levels, it's not required. There will always be a few monsters that you just can't kill on your own no matter how powerful you are, but there's a lot of very high level players that hardly ever group and play solo most of the time.
