Extremely strange Linux issue

Hi,
For some strange reason, Arch-Linux won't recognize my external USB 3.0 HFS Mac hard drive. I run it in a VM so message output is hard to retrieve; I'll give a general summary of it, though. first, I connect it to the computer. Next, I go into VMware Player and attach the device to the VM. A few seconds later, Arch-Linux says something like the following:
device descriptor read/64, error 18
It says this like 3 times, then says something about a epam or epohc packet length, and then:
usb-usb port 1: unable to enumerate USB device
After that, when I type

ls /dev/sd*

to see if it recognized it, it just shows /dev/sda. Is there a way I can get around this issue?
