Re: The races of startrek
@Danny, I think the tholiams turned up in other books and things, I know in one of the very few trek books I read (I think it was bendetta by peter David), they appeared, but they didn't appear in the series again. Then again this happens with lots of races in startrek, we see them for an episode and then they vanish.
Tos I just can't take seriously. it has the odd nice idea, but the characters, the way they go about things and the hole ethos of the show with women in miniskirts, pretty young yomen who basically cook, Kirk's distinctly unique blend of diplomacy, it's just all a bit over the top hence why i use the term "campy" to describe it, ---- heck the first Mud episode is essentially all about pimping! .
There are some interesting stories, albiet some like the roman one or the one where Kirk finds the survivers of a cold war are
just loopy, but it's the hole style of the thing that makes it hard to take seriously to me, where as next gen and ds9 have much more well rounded characters and a more adult style of storytelling (even if the first few seasons of Tng do poor on the moralizing and the treakle factor a little too much.
@Blindncool, I'd not recommend Voyager, especially if you like the awesome Borg of Tng. I was really interested to see the Borg in Voyager but they are then made utterly and completely useless and disposable, plus 7 of 9 was just ridiculous and quite irritating with her bloody nanno probes used to solve everything! :d.
I'd highly recommend Ds9 though especially if you like the Klingons, sinse all the klingon politics and setup in Tng, the conflicts with the house of Duras and the high council's mirky dealings all come to a head in Ds9 and actually resolve really well. We also see a lot more of Klingon culture, especially from Worf, there is an episode a bout the sword of Kalez for example, and the Klingon's conflict in the war with the dominian from the gamma quadrent is genuinely an interesting story with actual consequences rather than just meeting a race and moving on to the next plannet as happened previously in all of the trek series.
