Re: Monthly chat June 2015

@Bcs, funny to think of it being winter and actually cold somewhere, sinse up here it's the opposite, although it's more frequently warm and very rainy than sunny.

@JCion, I definitely appreciate the bit about moving, not fun it is, moving into my flat was pretty dire, and bits of the decorating only got done later.

@Tom, sorry to hear about the various health matters and your trip to casualty. I've avoided such ever sinse my near broken elbow in 2012, though given that there has been major upheavels in the news recently with people having ridiculously long waits in A&E that's probably a good thing. I have been wondering where you were (I definitely expected a reply from you in my startrek races topic).

As for me, nothing planned today immediately other than looking through my parts for tomorrow's performance. The only annoying part is I'll need to keep the light saber turned off during the singing sinse I don't want people put off by the hum. I did consider buying a none humming one but they're surprisingly expensive, particularly for a one off. I am currently waiting for the update of battle arena on the Iphone, which sounds great, that and reading the second coldfire book which is proving rather better than the first one.

It actually has a really unique take on religion which is that given a world in the distant future which has energy fields that cause people's unconscious desires to manifest as literal demons, and a force that can reshape nature over time, someone has the idea of introducing a very monotheistic church (patterned on the christian church), on the basis that an omniscient God is too powerful to be created out of people's actual desires, but people's combined belief and faith in a better world will act as a stablizing force and both help to remove some of the darker aspects of said energy, and also let the church reintroduce science and technology, which has a nasty habbit of going wrong on a world where anyone's unconscious thoughts could be effecting complex  mechanisms and causing them to fail. It's unclear as to whether god (the universal God),exists or not and leaves the question open, but I thought the ideas surrounding belief in itself as a counter to negativity was a rather interesting one, particularly considering how too often in scientce fiction it's always "science good, religion bad" which frankly I'm rather board of.

It's also far better written than the first, which is good sinse the first book dipped waaaaay too close to romance fiction for my liking in several places, the second has it's issues but I do like the concepts involved, particularly the way that it manages (like Robbert Silverberg's majipoor), to actually create a science fiction world of a distant earth colony, yet also has a reason for various fantasy tropes like monsters, warrior priests  and so rcerers.

I will say in terms of tv series, game of thrones is one of the best adaptations I've seen (martin himself writes one episode of each series and also has communicated with the producers). If your not a big reader I can see why the books would be daunting, though myself sinse my priority goes oxygen, reading! I really enjoyed them and can't wait for Winds of winter.
