The shield will only come up after you hit it. Use the d key object locator and check for the ship to see whether it's glowing red or not. And keep moving, always keep moving. best advice I can give. The missiles are slow, so dodging them shouldn't be that difficult. And since they take up only one horrizontal line, even the shift in height is enough to dodge them.
