What are your system specs, that could have something to do with it. Do not, for example, expect to get good results running a virtual machine on a computer with under 4gb of ram. Also, you will need to adjust the buffer stream size to a lower value, as by default it's 200ms. To do this, first shut down the virtual machine, and I mean actually shut it down. Now in the vmx file, add the following line.
pciSound.playBuffer = "30"
This will set the buffer stream size to 30ms, which is great for responsiveness. Pops and clicks in the sound may be noticeable on low-ram systems, but on a decent system you shouldn't get those.
