Re: Happy white cane day!
Thanks jake, the article does make it a bit clearer where this thing comes from, and why I've not heard of it (obviously it's an us specific thing).
However, I am still a little confused on the logic, here.
Firstly, it seems a little boarderline offensive to call a day recognizing blindness "white cane safety day" in the first place, after all the "white cane" isn't the entire identity of any visually impared person. It's a tool, but it no more defines being blind than a hammer defines being a carpenter, and just as a carpenter uses many different tools in their work, so a blind person might not necessarily use a cane (they might have a guide dog or do without).
Would we call a day celibrating indian culture "curry day?" I don't think so. Indeed this seems just another form of the usual "us/them" mentality we've seen before "Oh look at the special blind people with their special c anes"
I therefore totally agree with Barrack Obama on renaming the thing to "blind american's equality day"
As to whether a day "recognizing the achievements of blind americans" or whatever the description is is a good thing, well I'm afraid my first question is "why the hell aren't you recognizing the achievements of blind people the other 364 and a quarter days a year?) .
