More likely than actually dropping anything (data loss as you seem to
mean), what often happen with poorly terminated optical connectors
typical for Toslink are errors.  Bits actually get flipped at some low,
but audible rate.  This metric, cleverly called bit error rate (BER), is
typically significantly higher in Toslink than coax for audio gear.
