I do use a good Linear PSU (and cleaned mains supply) with my Squeezebox and my comments above still apply. I'm beginning to think that the Benchmark Dac 1 may have been the wrong choice for me and that I should probably steer away from oversampling DACs and stick to Non-oversampling Dacs. Someone on this forum has gone on about a new Dac called a Storm which sounds like a likely candidate for me (especially as it's less expensive than the Dac 1).
