I also think it's interesting that you had to lower the frequency and
that you partly described what you heard as a "buzz."  To me a "buzz"
is a sound where I'm not quite sure if I can resolve it into a series
of discrete thumps or if it's a kind of tone:  a card in bicycle
spokes, for example.  Again, I speculate that this is important: 
obviously the sound has to be asymmetric, or else it really _is_ the
same forward and backward; but I'm guessing it also should be
thumpy-buzzy rather than tony.
