The only argument for coax vs toslink or which transport is better is Jitter.
If your hard drive has jitter, you will have bit errors. If you have bit errors on a hard drive, it is broken: think of what a bit error would do if it was in your OS. Changing a single bit in "kernel32.sys" or whatever it is would trash Windows. Changing a single bit in a spreadsheet would either make it unloadable or convert a $10M loss into a billion dollar profit.
