I think it's really a matter of semantics. Oversampling is performed solely for the purpose of reducing the harmful effects of brickwall filters. Upsampling is really a form of sample rate conversion, and is necessary for systems that have asynchronous timing (i.e. input and output clocks are different). I think it is the marketers who have created the "mystique" of upsampling, and to be honest, clive, I agree with your premise. Upsampling could be considered a form of oversampling, and in fact, most upsampling systems also employ oversampling!
