Well, the usual explanation for one digital source sounding better than another one is "jitter" - search for many contrasting views on this subject!
BTW, you might want to try letting the SB do the D-A instead of the receiver... I have a Denon 2805 and have a definite personal preference for the SB option - using the receiver in Direct mode, of course, so it doesn't just convert back to digital again.
