I encode my files to FLAC format via EAC. The problem does not appear to be file specific, as the problem is common across new and old material.
Interestingly, having run the system all day with the volume turned dowm it is now very stable with no sign of the spikes. Could it be related to the time taken for the all of the equipment to stabilise? I keep the equipment in standby mode which conserves power when not in use.
