You're going to get as many different answers to your questions as there are reponses.
One obvious question - have you tried the analogue outs of the SB into your preamp? That would allow you to compare the DAC of the SB to the DAC of your CD player, rather than the DAC of the preamp to the DAC of the CD player as you are doing now. Since that's very easy I'd try it first - maybe you'll find you really like it, and then no need to worry about this. To answer yor questions, not all digital sources sound the same going into the same DAC, so the digital TP might sound different than the digital SB into the preamp.
