I just set up my second Squeezebox system, this one in my listening room
downstairs (my "big" system as opposed to the smaller system in my
living room where I have had an SB3 and a Benchmark DAC-1 running since
Christmas). My big system has an Audio Research VT-100 MkIII amp, BAT
VK30SE preamp, and Genesis 500 speakers, and the recently added SB3
running Apple lossless files into the Electrocompaniet ECD-1 DAC
(Kimber D60 coax digital cable). This source seems much louder in the
right speaker. I tried adjusting the balance on the BAT pre and I had
to tweak it +20 to the left channel to get the image focused in the
center of the speakers/room again. No other of my sources (Linn TT,
Marantz SA-1 SACD player, McIntosh MR67 tuner, Arcam CD-33 CD player)
has this imbalance. Is this a problem with the DAC, the SB3, the dig
coax cable, or something else? Are my Apple lossless files corrupted? I
don't hear the imbalance streaming the same files upstairs. Could the
tubes in my ARC or BAT be going out on one side? Wouldn't that create
crackles or distortion rather than softer sound? Should I adjust the
balance to one side for the SB3 or just forget about it and enjoy the
music tilted to one side of the room?
