Many years ago a chap called Colin Wonfor (IncaTech as was) started
selling gold plated mains plugs to be used for hifi. The results were
always consistent on audio products (especially CD players) but one of
the most interesting things he demonstrated was using a kettle. The
plug without gold-plating would run hot - i.e. showing a power loss,
whilst the gold-plated plug ran cool i.e. power was not being wasted in
the plug.
New dogs, old tricks?
