You should treat dealers with a little more respect, I think.  Try
being up-front with them - say that your budget is tight, and ask them
to help.  Most would understand, be happy to give you a quick demo and
try to price match as far as possible.  They usually recognise that if
they do their job well, you'll be back when you have a bit more cash
for the upgrades.

We can say plenty of rough things about dealers if we like, but we'd
all be much worse off without them.  Most of them are enthusiasts and
not driving Ferraris, and they might even be nice people!  If everyone
just used them as unpaid resource, they'd go out of business and we'd
be buying by guesswork.

BTW you're not entirely right about floorstanders.  A larger speaker
will usually have more deep bass, but may have no other advantages. 
Often smaller speakers have 95% of the performance at 60% of the cost,
and decent stands are quite cheap.
