Choosing a DAC with a AK4396 chip, excellent as it is, is not going to
get performance like Transporter's. The converter chip is just one of
many elements that determine the performance of a DAC. The power
supplies, op amps, passives, board layout, clock circuits, and emi
control are all critical factors. Transporter's low noise levels
actually beat AKM's reference board by a wide margin, and other
commercial AK4395 and AK4396 implementations that I've seen appear to
be signficantly cost reduced even from there. So it's a bad idea to use
just the converter chip as the deciding factor in choosing any DAC.
