I have noticed that sometimes an mp3 sounds more "pleasing" than the
original wav file.  It seems to sort of "sand down" the rough edges of
some music.  Less accuracy doesn't always mean less listenable.  

It's not that unusual.  We've all heard stuff on a cheap car radio or
table radio that somehow sounds "right", when the same music played on
an ultra-revealing high-end system might have problems that get in the
way of enjoyment.
