In my experience replaygain does not adversely affect sq. Replaygain works by attaching tags to each file which contain instructions to the player on how to adjust volume.
This is one of the best features of replaygain, the file itself is not affected at all. The tags can be erased if desired, and the player can always be instructed to ignore the replaygain tags. The SlimServer has a very nice implementation of "smart gain", this detects if you are playing a random mix or an album straight through.
