Well, in my experience a lot of older CDs sound better than newer ones. General mastering quality is going down hill.
When the industry started pushing SACD (it's dead now) they put more thought into mastering for it, probably to encourage people to think it was better than CD. The argument is logical...it's just you don't agree with it.
