Apple will NEVER do anything even remotely open source. Just look how
long it has taken them to give up on DRM and then only because they
were/are losing market share to the DRM free mp3's available on Amazon.
And please do give my any of that nonsense about how iTunes keeping DRM
was because of the record companies and not because of Steve Jobs' lust
for complete control (over everything and anything) - those same record
companies were fast enough to toss away DRM when it came to making a
deal with Amazon. Money talks.

What is needed is an online store with the vast catalog like Amazon or
iTunes which sells reasonably priced DRM-free, open source, e.g. flac
and not WMA or Apple lossless, downloads. At present some stores do
exist but they are either over priced or have limited catalogs or
both.

I believe that it's safe to say that around here flac rules.
