I think badly compressed recordings are softened a bit by MP3. In a
previous thread I noted this was actually visible in audacity when I
compared FLAC with MP3! I look at it this way. Some transient details
are missed by MP3 on a good recording - but on the positive side some
of the extreme screeching peaks are missed on poor recordings. :) So
people preferring MP3 is analogous to some preferring valve amps. Both
cause measurable distortions - but this can sound good depending on the
recording, system etc.

Given that many modern recordings are 'engineered for MP3' maybe it
isn't so surprising these don't sound brilliant on an accurate system
(or with more accurate codecs).

So we are back again to the old chestnut of recording values. The more
I think about it this is the root of the problem and its solution.
