That's good to know. I'm surprised it's not clear in any of the specs that this is:
1. How the digital volume control works, since it is superior to most other methods, and 2. that the digital output is always 24 bit. I guess the only downside is that: 1. If you are trying to stream HDCD without it being decoded or unpacked on the server, you can't (since an external D/A converter that understands HDCD won't understand 24bit word length as a valid HDCD stream). 2. If you are trying to stream a DTS CD you have on your server, into a surround decoder, again you cannot do so, because the stream is not unaltered.
