Thanks for the replies, everyone. I already use the Axiom passive pre, and I see that they make an XLR version. Maybe I'll give that a try, or to reduce 1 box and set of patch cables, look into the Endlers.
Perhaps I'll also look into the possibility of borrowing or demoing a DAC to see if that will really make a big difference to me.
