Good .

But there must be some parts of this "system" that is very similar in
all humans, as some recordings and some dsp soundfields can reliably
create this illusion for many people .

So there must be some common techniques that the sound engineer can use
to give these cues to the listener, especially in movie soundtracks .

And counter to that there must be some no no things in both mixing and
design of audio equipment that usually always ruins this illusion .

My own ear brain "system" is damaged so I does not hear 3D in
recordings as easily as when I was young, but real 3D is no problem .
My left and right ear have different freq response due to more hearing
damage in the right one .

And I have also listened to a lots of hifi who produces 3D soundstage
where there is none, it can be speakers with back firing treble units
or similar arrangement .
3D soundstage is what many hifi users wants so no wonder that hifi
producers wants to produce the effect even if it not in the recording
at all.
Given what phil just said, some recording are meant to have some
dimensionality even if the real 3D relations can not be captured or
reproduced some acoustical stereo microphone recordings do this very
convincingly.
And some records are very dry and does not add to this effect, these
dry recordings should not sound "3D" in any way ? or.
