Assuming you are testing to a classic player then I think the difference is likely to be some changes to the firmware which slowed down the maximum rate that network test would run at. So I agree its not as accurate now as it used to be (unfortunately). In contrast network test on squeezeplay players should be more accurate in recent builds.
