You could also just use the prebuilt modules in
linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.24-16-generic or build your own modules using
the aufs-source package (you could also use the one in Debian, which has
been updated to the version of this monday).

The aufs-source packages in Debian and Ubuntu are fully patched for NFS Kernels,
and AppArmor. (and the kernel includes all patches, too) [0]
You can even use aufs to boot the standard Ubuntu Live CDs. [1]

Why not use the package? That's what I created them for.
