I'm not convinced this is a gcc bug, as this usage is exceptionally
common. Do you have anything from the gcc developers on this?
I suspect it's most likely a long-standing memory handling bug which, by
serendipity, we only just hit with this version of gcc, these CFLAGS and
only on i686.
