As a long time maintainer of a local mailing list I had to learn, that there are many user mail clients around, which don't show any signatures / footers by default. So this may help some people to unsubsrcribe, but certainly not all of them. I suspect there is a connection between a lack of knowledge about how to use mailing lists and the use of such clients. I'm also on the "just unscubcribe people manually" side - you don't change people by acting as bad tempered as them, you just harm yourself and your community.
