Methinks Mr Workman has never heard of aerodynamic heating when talking of SSTs. Yes, the pouch form factor battery is better for energy storage than the cylindrical one.

Here's a rough guide to energy densities of various fuels/batteries. Even allowing for thermodynamic losses in heat engines, batteries have a long way to go to match hydrocarbon fuels.

For the spaceflight enthusiasts, Elon unveiled his plans for getting to Mars this morning. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_sY_5vSxmLQ Truly a BFR and a BFS. About 4 times the thrust and mass of the Saturn V Moon rocket. That won't be done electrically although a New Zealand/US company called Rocket Lab is using Lithium - ion batteries to drive the turbopumps in the engines of their small satellite launcher.
