Certainly do the ABCDE-P _before_ getting in and having another person to
monitor you once you are in the cockpit cannot do you any harm, and it may
even save your life.  For an example (non-life threatening though) I once
did a walk round and for some reason (I cannot remember why) left an
under-wing inspection flap on a Blanik open.  My wing-man noticed it.
