So Boyd Munro was uncomplimentary about some aspect of the operation of the
GFA at some time in the past. So what, I say. If you wish to live in the
past and use the past as the basis of deciding to decline Air Safety
Australia (ASA) membership then I think you are wrong.

(And I am not having a go at Dave Sharples here. It was entirely legitimate
for Dave, who has my respect, in his email to refresh our memories on some
of the past matters when Munro was in AOPA and was abrasive vis a vis GFA.)

Ask yourself this. What organisation can you join where you can be informed
about some of the darker aspects of impending or existing legislation?
There are nasty aspects to various pieces of legislation affecting aviation
which have in recent years been enacted by Parliament. There can be nasty
aspects to impending or proposed legislation affecting aviation. Air Safety
Australia gives you an insight into these issues not redily available
elsewhere. Yes its largely Munro's view. Generally I find he argues his
case pretty well.

More than this, ASA provides ways you can actually take action personally to
influence politicians to change things. To many bits of bad legislation
have got through due to the apathy of the pilot population.

So I reckon my membership of and participation in ASA is a good thing. I
recommend you join.

As for AOPA, I ceased being a member expressly because they continued year
by year to issue annual accounts which did not provide a breakdown of
expenditure for the year in their annual accounts presented to members.
Total income, total expenditure and the resulting surplus were reported,
plus a breakdown of income, but no breakdown of expenditure. So you could
never know from the accounts whether claims that they were in financial
trouble due excessive expenditure on legal actions was true or not. Morover
they were operating contrary to their constitution which requires them to
report detailed income and expenditure in their annual report.

(Actually GFA do the same in the annual financial report to members and I
find this practice entirely unsatisfactory. Expenditure is not detailed,
only the total. This should change with the migration of GFA to an
incorporated association under Victorian legislation, because the Victorian
Act requires income and expenditure statements as well as the balance
sheet.)
