Hi all,

A handy piece of gear I carry around in my glider pocket, is a small, handheld UHF CB which so far, has lasted 2 years with it's internal alkaline batteries! ( only used for a few hours ). I carry this because my crew has a 40 channel CB in the 4WD as well ( Channel 40 is the best radar detector out - all the truckies use this channel and issue radar alerts ). Recently, landing out on Day 1 at the NSW State comps ( a real bummer! ) I had cause to use it , after phoning through the location , an hour later I was talking to my crew direct on the handheld giving further directions, around 10km car to person - not bad, also, the homestead was on channel 19 , should we need any help de rigging - just call.

Most farms and tractors, 4WD, country fire , truckies etc etc  have UHF, if you happen to land somewhere outside phone coverage, and the farmhouse you just walked to is empty, try calling on all 40 channels - you will probably find someone!

Dick Smith has a special running this week - 2 UHF handies for $99.00 - pretty good value.

Merry Xmas to all , have a good one!

Cheers
