The reason you had it was that the IS30 is ex-Southern Cross.
I think that there is some confusion over this locking pin. The 28's in SCGC have had 
them as long as I've been in the club (17 years), and were fitted by Tom Gilbert.
The reason I always heard was that a front seat pilot had inadvertently knocked the 
locking pin with his elbow causing it to open.
The other reason (canopy opening in spins) has come to light much more recently. I 
can't say which is the original reason. Tom would know.

Regardless of the above, we operate the gliders without parachutes (and I know that is 
likely to cause another thread), so it's irrelevant whether the canopy is locked in 
flight. And yes, we spin the gliders without chutes too. 
I have never had anyone refuse to perform a spin through safety concerns, but, if that 
was the case, I certainly would not make them, however, I WOULD insist on a 
demonstration of recovery from an incipient spin.

We had the same "mod" on our IS30 and is has been removed for a reason I am
not privy to.  I did not like it anyway so I am glad it has gone.
