More on Anti-collision Devices

In response to IGC President Bob Henderson’s letter, in which the IGC
approved FLARM as an anti-collision device, I asked him if this approval
applied to other electronic anti-collision systems, or if each system would
have to receive a separate IGC approval, like data loggers.

His response clarifies the situation: "The change we have made to the Annex
A rule should cover all devices that provide warnings of potential collisions.

If we end up with mini-TCAS technology in gliders, then we will
have a
different problem. It seems to me that, as long as the anti-collision
warning only gives a short-range warning and does not include continuous
data regarding relative position, altitude and changes to altitude (i.e.
TCAS style displays) then we are not providing info that can be used to
leech." Thanks, Bob!

This would seem to preclude TCAS style displays in FAI contests and the IGC
would seem to be worried about long range warning or tracking devices.
