Maybe it sounds crazy but how about renting sattelite phones
(e.g. http://www.satellitephonestore.com/, found from
http://www.google.com.au/search?q=satellite+phone) or get one
of the sattelite phone providers to sponsore a competition (thus you
can hopefully get free phones AND the sponsors pays for advertisements
which mention the competition)

I could think up ways to cut down the traffic when multiple gliders are close
enough to exchange FLARM data among themselves but I suspect I've been
too long outside the bunker so I'll shut up now.
