I think the root of the problem which keeps making these discussinos
come up is that people who haven't joined up as fully-fledged (ha-ha)
glider pilots don't have "a genuine interest in gliding/soaring" *yet*.
Perhaps they will later, when they've tasted it and worked out whether
they enjoy it. But until they're hooked, superficial crap like image
and reputation will have a powerful influence on their perceptions,
and will generally control whether or not they feel like investigating
the time and effort needed to get hooked.
Once they're hooked, a lot of that stuff doesn't matter anymore.
I must qualify my comments as those from someone whose only joined your
ranks in the last couple of months.
