Better than the rubber ducky (and more expensive). Microair make a ground plane free antenna for their radios. If you could get it into the rudder this would be best.
If you want quick though, you can lay it along the fuselage (by the wheel box or behind in the tail boom, clear of controls etc) and tape it in place.  Theoretically this gives less than optimum radiation pattern but I did it in a Jantar and it worked quite well.

Thats interesting about the mice into TE line.  Get a rubberducky aerial on a short bit of coax and start from there and that would be better than no aerial which may be the case  The Dick Smith aerial is D4025 probably made by  Greg Ackmans? Mobileone at Camden...........Ian M

Thanks John Parncutt, John Ashford and Ian.

Your help is much appreciated.

John A, I would like to take up your offer of SWR meter when you return from the desert.

Ian, my glider is ASW20C. No prangs. But there was damage some time ago from mice eating into total energy tubes in the fin. Maybe they got into the aerial also.

Thanks again.

Cheers,

R.

Richard,  What glider do you have?  The ones that have aerials that play up are all Libelle 301s and early 201s and the Nimbus 4DM (aerial is in rudder and receives a dose of tail water all over the BNC connector!!) to name a few. I am sure there are many others.  Also has the glider had a broken back? Regretfully some repairers do not really check the aerial before they do repair!!!!

If SWR is poor check connect to radio and if OK for about $30 I would go to DSE abd get a 1/4 wave ss aerial.  Make up a ground plane as best you can and mount in fuse about abeam trailing edge and above rudder cables with aerial bent over at top if necessary.  I have found several poor radios have burst into life with such a aerial set up.

Let me know on progress and Nigel Andrews may have more ideas. Unfortunately some people buy new radio when they actually have other problems - like too thin wires in glider - I recommend 18g for singles and 16g for these big 2 seaters and look for those glass fuse holders - blade fuses seem to cause less problems.
