Just for fun, I looked it up. According to CASA, (latest statistics in 2005 ) there are currently 12,536 aircraft on the register. Subtract 1,117 gliders and 341 Balloons, you have 11,078 engine powered aircraft. If we remove those over 5700kg MTOW we effectively get rid of the airliners & heavy piston engined a/c (which also contribute to pollution), so subtract another 569. Leaves 10,509. Allow a couple of hundred for light jets (L39, Mig 15 etc) and Jet powered Helicopters etc, that's roughly 10,200+ piston engined aircraft. http://www.casa.gov.au/casadata/register/recentype.htm ROSS
