Nth Qld is actually in a growth phase again, maybe not with a bullet but we are 
growing. Our demographics have for a long time indicated we should be much 
bigger than we are. There is some sensational flying available here, that is 
once you get used to flying over vast areas of tiger country. It can be quite 
scary at first glance. Flight planning is ultra important here.
But back to the thread...I think people are attracted to flying because their 
imagination puts them in this environment of freedom and exhilarating vision. I 
think glider pilots are those who still hang on to this love of  self 
"aerialisation" (thank you Maslow).

Good to see that the Darwin guys are flying again. 
 
Having been to Ayr(waited a couple of hours for the weather to clear before 
getting in to Townsville) and seen the Blanik tied down outside I'd say Ayr 
isn't great and maybe Charters Towers is better enough to warrant the extra 
drive time. In any case Ayr at 100Km or so is too far. I remember a large 
airfield at Townsville.
