Well 3 or 4 years ago I had 4 chutes to take down to my re packer, one of
them had never been re packed since new, done 7 or more years off 400 hour a
year plus flying and comps and the re packer commented that it was in
perfect condition, opened fine! The only reason it got re packed was because
of the recent requirement to have it done for comps.

I am not saying this is a reason for longer re packs, just was an
interesting happening as we all thought it would fall apart when it was
opened.

I really can't remember what the opening time did after 12 months. 
Got a little slower again I think.

Then again you have to ask about the difference between a parachute 
worn every day and one worn one day every two weeks and stored in a 
cool dry place in between.
I suspect a lot of things are getting done in aviation 
because  "that's the way it always has been done" possibly 
because  inferior older technology  set the requirements and then not 
being reviewed.
