The last one I made I used straight glass tubes (industrial chemist 
supplies). I did experiment with bending them myself but it wasn't such a 
neat job. In the end it's easiest to use two straight glass tubes and a 
short length of PVC or Silicon tube to join their bottoms. That curves as 
nice as you like.

The glass is better than plastic tubing as the water doesn't seem to stick 
to it as much.

Also from Ben's or other industrial suppliers you might be able to get a 
colouring agent for the water, which helps a lot to make the reading easier. 
It is specifically for water manometers and has an SG=1. Can be red or 
green. If you don't have the tubes mounted on a white background, run a 
white tape up behind the tube (what glider pilot wouldn't have rolls of 
white tape!)
