I got down to 900' over Callington years ago in the Boomerang and was scratching away when an Orion passed under me ! That was scary.

Similarly, John Viney and I shared a thermal at Laverton with a large,
green, open, plastic garbage bag at 5000'

no big surprise there Mal as I am sure that there are others who like me
have been at 10
000ft and joined up with a flock of Pelikans, what did surprise me
though
was to be joined by a big bunch of tumbleweed whilst thermalling at 10
00ft
just south of Waikerie where the BIG thermals play

Looking at the clouds in the photographs they indicate convection is
occurring thus the bird was soaring the thermals.

He described the circumstances of the incident, which happened between
10am
and noon, as near freakish. "It's a surprise thing at 3000ft to have a
bird
strike," he said.
