Micheal, The worrying thing is the long term CO2 trend.
Life on Earth is going to have a problem long before the sun dies or becomes a red giant. The CO2 is all getting sequestered in the rocks and below 100ppm in the atmosphere all the plant life dies followed shortly by all the animal life and if we're still around, then us.
We're doing the biosphere a service by releasing locked up carbon. However burning coal for stationary power generation is a pretty nasty business as various things like mercury and radioactive elements in the coal are released into the atmosphere. Coal power plants would be shut down if they were nukes due to the radioactive release. Better to convert to liquid transport fuels where some of the nasties can be taken out in the process. The best way to use hydrogen as a fuel is to tie it to carbon atoms. Then we can continue to drive to gliding sites and still have fuel for launches.

Maybe I missed it, but I can't see what CO2 has to do with it. The average temp of the Earth has been stable at 22 degrees C for the last 600 million years except for brief periods during which it plummets to 12 degrees C for 10 million years or more before shooting back up to 22 again. None of these variations showed any correlation to CO2 level. http://www.paulmacrae.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/06/co2-levels-over-time1.jpg http://www.paulmacrae.com/?p=29 Currently it is up to 14 deg C. Personally I feel that Humans made a big mistake by evolving during the coldest 2 million years on Earth (the last 2 million). What on earth did we think we were going to do when it warmed back up to 22 deg C again? No forward planning. 25,000 species become extinct per year (or about 1 per million of currently living species per year according to fossil records). How are we going to power all those air-conditioners we'll need? But Soaring will be GREAT! http://www.geocraft.com/WVFossils/Carboniferous_climate.html http://www.geocraft.com/WVFossils/ice_ages.html > On Thu, 23 Oct 2008 09:54:37 +1000, Mike Borgelt wrote: > >I'm happy to support a 50% + reduction in Australian CO2 emissions by > >2023.
