I was in an ASH25E which winch launched with the engine running off a short strip in Germany.

Hallooo:
On days when the airport was too busy to allow self-launching (Back taxi glider runway, use full length of the power runway. Aerotow start line is mid field of the glider runway and gliders land short of that) I have aerotowed the AS-H26E with the engine running behind a Pawnee. Just use about 5000RPM initially and bring up the power and pull the handle at about 500', putting the tug in a good position to land and tow someone else. This gives backup for a launch failure... Except if the tug loses power on the ground! Had no idea that certification was needed to do that, it just works. The technique has been used with sustainers for a while.
