That used to be the situation before modern technology came along and
increased economic opportunity by increasing the distance people
could travel to get to and from work/play and more importantly
increase the distance the food they need could be transported.
Your prescription would pretty much kill gliding.
I've actually managed to do what you say. Going to work is down the
stairs and turn left. I've also managed to avoid huge distances to
travel to go gliding or flying because I dislike driving cars.
